Won't initialize
Bug #: 59
File: LOTRO Skin Editor
Date: 12-02-2011 03:50 AM
By: Adder
Status: Unconfirmed
I can't get the Skin Editor to initialize. I did a reinstall of .NET 4.0 (actually repaired it to make sure it wasn't corrupt) and installed SlimDX. I extracted the zip file into Documents/Lord of the Rings Online/LOTRO Skin Editor folder for convenience and have the Panel Data Folder, ArtAssetID.txt file as well as the executable (current version). I ran the .exe as admin (Vista Pro) but all I get is the following message...
Quote:
Main(Init): Could not initialize the main program.

Status: Creating device\Source: Throw

Message: D3DERR_INVALIDCALL: Invalid call (-2005530516)

All I can suggest right now is to make sure your DirectX is all up to date. Something is stopping the program from being able to initialize your graphics card, but I can't really tell what it might be.

Quick question, have you managed to run any versions before?

I have not tried an earlier version. I just came back to LOTRO this past summer after a lengthy absence and plugins were nonexistent when I left. I'm just now exploring all of these great additions to the game.

I am running DirectX 11 on Vista Home Premium SP2 (I erroneously indicated Vista Pro earlier). I may know the cause of my problem now though. I didn't realize that it was the graphics card that couldn't initialize. I'm using a Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop with a Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset in dual monitor mode (the other being my 55" Sony Widescreen HDTV). Unfortunately, this graphics chipset has caused issues in the past with various games and is not capable of using all of the features available in DX10 or 11. It can run OK for awhile and then suddenly have an issue with an update and I can no longer run the game. In this case, I'd wager that something in your Skin Editor is not compatible with this older chipset even though all of my drivers are as current as possible.

Yes, it could be the problem. The editor is only set to use DX9, but there could be something in the configuration your chipset cannot handle. I'll take a look to see if I can change something, but I am using a fairly standard initialization routine.

Any luck with this? I've deleted and reinstalled but it didn't help. I do have a quick question for you... Does this use Shader Model 3 by any chance? If so, that is the problem since my chipset only supports SM2.

I am trying to put in some extra checks when initializing the graphics device. Should be in for the next release.
