where to start skinning

New to skinning all together and was wondering where to start. What program (s) to use to skin or edit the skin. Just really want to change the colors in the original skin. But any help and ideas would be appreciated. I have looked through a few skins I have gotten here and have an idea of what can be skinned or changed, just don't know where to start. Thanks for any help in advance.

Best way to learn about the code is to look into other people's doings.

What comes to the programs used here's a few that I would recommend http://www.lotrointerface.com/downloads/info232.html

Photoshop would be ideal for image editing but there are some freeware options too.

I have found notepad++ to be the best editor, and I use Paint.net to edit graphics. Freeware For The Win!

Daimon is right; looking through other people's work is the best learning ground...
