Circle!

Description
Okay, this is an attempt to make the mouse more visible while it's not moving. (Theoretically, this should be the hardest time to track it - the human eye is attracted to motion. If you did want to make a mouse cursor more visible while it was moving, theory suggests the best way to do it is to increase the mouse trails - this assumes that you're losing track of the mouse due to it moving too quickly. I haven't tried creating more mouse trails, because I don't have an image of the mouse cursor, and quite frankly, I suck at drawing.)

That said, what this does is put a circle around the mouse cursor after it's been immobile for too long. I didn't want to actually overly some graphics to make the mouse cursor appear bigger, because 1) I suck at drawing, and 2) I think the mouse cursor should change shape due to context (i.e., it should change shape when its functionality changes) - any other reason would be likely to confuse me.

There's also a command line interface, because I don't do window interfaces. The commands are:

/mousecircle color [r g b] - sets the color of the circle
(default is 1 0.5 0.5 - a nice salmony pink)
/mousecircle toggle - toggles the mouse circle on or off
/mousecircle on - turns the mouse circle on
/mousecircle off - turns the mouse circle off
/mousecircle delay - sets the delay before the mouse circle pops up (in seconds)
/mousecircle size - sets the size of the circle (default is 50)

I hope this solves someone's probably with mouse visibility, but I can't do any usability testing since I'm generally okay at tracking the mouse cursor.

Thumbs up Thank yew

Just wanted to say thanks for addressing a issue that has been driving me crazy, the disappearing mouse! Usually during a CJ or other important event, my mouse will vanish! Is there anyway you could also make the mouse itself bigger and a different color? My 1680x1050 resolution gives a large area for the cursor to get lost in. Thanks again for the addon!

Mouse Cursor Highlighter (Advanced)

This MouseCircle is hitting shy of the mark for what i wanted, but i appluad you for addressing a problem that drives me crazy. Ive died a few times all because i couldnt see where the mouse pointer was and unable to hit the potion or other icon needed to save me. So i need a highlighter for when it is moving, and not just while it rests.

So ive been creating an advanced plugin. Its early stages at the moment and im working on an options window at the moment.

A Few features already working and/or planned

Ability to change the highlight image. This could enable the user to add their own without erasing the original(s)
Ability to have it only show while in combat mode or on all the time.
Have the highlighter pulsate, change color or other automatically. So that it is noticable in any enviroment.

These are just a few of the ideas im playing with.

Update 18/03/11: Alot of progress has been made on my plugin and it wont be far off release.

Below are few screenshot snippets for you to see what ive done so far.

Follow this plugins progress here Mouse Cursor Highlighter Advanced

error when i use it..?

I get this msg i have all the Turbine stuff not sure why?

... Rings Online\Plugins\moebius92\MouseCircle\Main.lua:5: Unable to resolve package "Turbine.Utils".

Also to get the manager to see this I had to remove it from the plugins file that it comes in and set it in the Lotro Plugins file? not sure why the morbuis92 file does not load directly in to the lotro Plugins file? It loaded in to that file but inside its own Plugins file.... Docs./user/lotro/plugins/plugins/morbuis92/
Not sure why?

This is useful--wish you had an interface though--especially for the color choices.

Without an interface, I would suggest that when the plugin is loaded you automatically show the available commands in the chat window. A lot of other plugins do that, and can prevent users being lost if they don't remember them (or don't know to type /mousecircle help)

Feature wise--I'd love to see a configurable timeout added, so the circle disappears after a given amount of seconds. (Reason: For it to work well, the circle color needs to be pretty garish--not something I want to leave forever uglying up my screen every time I'm afk a bit).

Editing to add one more suggestion: Just realized when I'm moving about with keyboard arrows, or by holding both mouse buttons down, the circle pops up. There should be an option to not do that if -any- mouse/keyboard event is ongoing--I don't think people want that circle on their screen ruining the view at all times when they're traveling.

Nevermind previous post.....can someone help me get my circle to red? I dont know the formula.

I have tried everything and keep getting this message...

Online\Plugins\moebius92\MouseCircle\Main.lua:129: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'i' (a nil value)

thanks
I haven't tried this plugin, but if you think of the 3 numbers as sliders for red, green, and blue, then 0 is off and 1.0 is full for the slider. If you want a pure red, you would do 1.0 0 0. For a darker red, turn down the red number (closer to black), like 0.8 0 0. So the command is /mousecircle color 1 0 0

Wow, thank you! I've been asking Turbine to add in some type of size slider, or color slider for the ingame moust pointer since SoA beta. Thank you so much for this!

I am definitely finding it useful. I lost the cursor all the time before and now I can actually find it.

Rather interesting idea. I usually lose the cursor when in groups and there's a lot of bright lights going on. I suspect this might bring the end for that .. too bad I can't test it yet (although Codemasters has made some progress getting the update for us Europeans too).
