LotR:O Plugin Assistant - Basic Instructions

Description
LotR:O Plugin Assistant

Overview

The purpose of the LotR:O Plugin Assistant is to simplify the installation and management of LotR:O plugins. It’s designed to accommodate users with no prior experience with plugins. The primary goal of the program is to automate the process of installing plugins. However, the program will also install the necessary Turbine support files if they are missing and allow users to enable or disable plugins as well as delete them entirely.

Say, for example, you download a plugin file and save it to your desktop. All you need to do is run the LotR:O Plugin Assistant then drag and drop the plugin file you downloaded into the LotR:O Plugin Assistant's Plugin list. That's it. The program will examine the plugin and install it to the right directory without user intervention. The plugin will be ready for use in game.

Installation

To install the LotR:O Plugin Assistant just click the "Download" link and save the installer to your desktop. Once the file has finished downloading double-click the installer. This will open the installation wizard. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete installation.

Limitations

The LotR:O Plugin Assistant can only assist with matters outside the game. While it can greatly simplify the process of installing plugins it will not make them any easier to run in the game. For help using plugins in game this author recommends PluginManager by Cearbhall. It provides a simple, easy to use platform from which to list and launch plugins within the game (I recommend it as the first plugin for any new plugin user).

Notes

The LotR:O Plugin Assistant is written in Microsoft Visual Basic and, as such, requires Microsoft .NET Framework 4 in order to run. The .NET Framework freely available and can be downloaded here.

The LotR:O Plugin Assistant makes use of the 7z.exe executable file for it's file decompression needs.

This error is caused by plugins where a file with the extension "plugincompendium" exists. If you delete this file the tool works again.´

Is this still being updated at all? I notice that Ify hasn't responded for quite a while. I have been using Plugin Assistant for over a month now with no problems but tonight, as I was loading MonsterItems-1.0.zip after loading a few other updated plugins, I noticed that it was not showing in the available plugins (I had 82 available at the time) so I retried it and it still didn't show. I then closed Plugin Assistant and reopened it which gave me the error listed below which is the same problem Vald was having. I clicked Continue and Plugin Assistant launched but no plugins are listed and it won't accept any new ones. I closed it and relaunched - same thing. I then tried reinstalling it (over the old install because I didn't want to lose all of the already loaded plugins by uninstalling it) but it still gives the same error. If Ify is no longer around, does anyone have any ideas what may be the problem here?

On the initial window that pops up (before the details), it says "The path is not of a legal form". Please look into this and respond. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times AND have made sure that .NET has been upgraded to the most current version.

BTW, I highlighted two lines in the error details below that may be part of the problem.

I'm not sure what's changed but Plugin Assistant has suddenly stopped working for me. Now, whenever I run it, I get a window referring to .Net Framework, saying I have an "unhandled exception error". I did manually remove some plugins recently. Other than that, I'm not sure what's changed. I have tried uninstalling Plugin Assistant and reinstalling but I get the same error every time.

Here is the full error text:

okeys sorry for the late response. I tried it.

I use Betsiel's Filterbags as an example.

Filterbags includes Betsiel as maindir. Inside that is a Filterbag Folder and Filterbag.plugin (\Betsiel\Filterbag\)

When I extract the folder on my desktop and drag the extracted folder on Plugin Assistant it does the following:

Instead of having Plugins\Betsiel\Filterbag\ folders inside my plugins dir it cut's the root dir of the plugin entirely - aka it leaves out Betsiel folder and files in that folder (in this case Filterbag.plugin file). I'm left with Plugins\Filterbag\ folder and everything inside there.

One thing that might have something to do with it is that when I first installed your work I didn't use the default path for installing, instead I installed PA at custom location. After thinking of that I uninstalled, killed all related registry values I could find from win reg and re-installed at default dir: C:\Program Files (x86)\LotRO Plugin Assistant

Hope this gives you some clues.

And as said. If I manually install plugins PA finds them and shows them in the list. Deleting plugins from PA gui also works great.

Cheers.

Thanks for your response Daimon, I really do appreciate the feedback! I've got an idea for you if you'd like to try it...

Try downloading a new plugin to your desktop. Then unzip the plugin yourself to a folder on your desktop. Now drag that folder into the plugins list of the program and let me know what happens. Does this produce an error message like "I couldn't find a plugin in that folder" or did it manage to install the plugin?

I don't consider this a viable workaround (the program is designed to work with folders or files but I'd prefer it to at least be able to unpack compressed files!) but it may help me localize where the problem lies. I think I know where the program is failing but I'm still not sure why.

Anyway, thanks again for your feedback and any further input you can provide is very much appreciated!

No need to be sorry heh. I'm just reporting this so you might eliminate a possible bug that might affect some other users as well.

I tried it on admin mode but then I can't even drag the items in it (gives me the (/) sign). non-admin and I get the error message told in the previous post.

I'm sorry I haven't had as much time recently as I'd like to devote to this project. However, I have no intention of abandoning it though updates may come more slowly than I'd like. That being said.

Daimon,

Thank you for your response and thank you for trying the program. I'm sorry to hear it's not able to install plugins for you!

From what you describe it sounds like you're doing everything right - but the program is failing to recognize zipped up plugins correctly. The .NET Framework 4 you have installed should be sufficient (The multi-targeting pack is part of the Visual Basic Suite I am using to assemble the program). I don't think the client locale should make a difference but, as always, I could be wrong.

I don't know if the two issues are related or not but, the poster before you couldn't get the program to work for them if they were running the program with administrator rights. Does it make a difference for you if you right-click the desktop icon and "Run as Administrator" versus "Run as different user"? ('different user' being any non-administrator user.) If you have an opportunity to try this, please let me know if it makes any difference.

Again, thank you for trying the program! I'm sorry it's not working for you but I really do appreciate the compliments and I will work to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.

Kaisoul,

I'm glad you were finally able to get the program working for you though I'm sorry it gave you so much trouble. I have a couple ideas what may be causing the problem and, as above, will work to resolve the problems you are having. I hope the one solution will fix both problems.

Thank you again for your time and feedback, and thank you for trying the program.

******

Again, thank you both for your responses and I will post an update here as soon as I have something ready to go.

Hey. Looks a great manager.

I have a problem though. It doesn't appear to work for me. I get an error from every single plugin I'm dragging into it: "I didn't find a plugin in there."

I must be missing something I guess. Got fresh installed Framework 4 Client and Extended (but no multi-targeting pack, didn't find it anywhere, the ms installer didn't install that. I guess it's vb related somehow ?). Oh using euro client (goes live during the following day) and euro win7 64b.

After installing plugins manually I can see the plugins in the program though. Can even enable/disable them.

Anyways Thanks for you effort in this.

Kiasoul,

Thanks for hanging in there! If you can see anything that says "Microsoft .NET framework 4" in your add/remove programs list you should have what you need.

When the program runs, you should see all your installed plugins in the list. Do they appear in the list?

If you haven't installed any plugins, you should at least see the four example plugins: CombatQuickslots, Examples, TheOneBag & Vitals. Do these appear in the list?

If you're seeing any plugins in the list you should be ready to go. All you should need to do is exactly what you said: Download a plugin file (usually a .zip file) and save it to your desktop then drag the file into the plugins list on the program. But you can only drop them directly into the white list box - it won't work if you drop it anywhere else on the program.

If the program finds no problems with the plugin file you dropped, you won't see anything happen except that the new plugin name should be added to the list. (It's supposed to work with minimal interaction with the user)

However, if the program finds some problem with the plugin file it will tell you what that problem is.

Please let me know whether you're seeing any plugins listed at all when the program runs. Also, make sure you're dropping the files into the Plugins List.

If, after this, you still can't use the program - please send me a link to the plugin you downloaded so I can test it on this end. Also let me know what operating system you're using.

Kaisoul,

Thank you for trying the program. Are you having trouble getting the program to run or are you having trouble using the program?

From your description I'm not sure which is the case. However, if you're having trouble getting the program to run my first guess would be that you may need to install the Microsoft .NET 4 framework. The program will not function without it.

If you have already installed the Microsoft .NET 4 framework there should be an entry for it in your Add Remove Programs list in the Control Panel. You should see something like this.

If you do not see an entry for the Microsoft .NET 4 framework please install it with the following this link.

However, if you should find that you already have the Microsoft .NET 4 framework installed please explain the problem you're having in a little more detail.

Is the program causing errors? Does it not seem to be doing what it's supposed to be doing? Please give me as much detail as you can about the problem you're experiencing.
