Have installed and got this running...... great little app, Kudos for creating it

I know the EU servers arent sorted properly yet but have noticed another little bug

When picking your Server, you have Darrowdelf listed.... it's actually DWARROWDELF ... and it refuses to load my toons. Other Servers get my toons fine, just not this one
Well that was embarrassing

Not only that, but I'd hoped this was something that would take 2 seconds fix - and thanks to a couple of other bugs popping up, that turned into 2 hours :\

Regardless...v0.5 is up and waiting for approval. This will not only make it stop being so rude to Dwarrowdelf players, but will also be nicer to creeps, naked freeps, and leave former EU players just waiting on Turbine.

hmm.. If you already have an older version installed, try removing that one first as you would uninstall any other application - and try installing this version again. Let me know if the problem continues, and I'll see if I can find any other possibilities.

I like this but am finding the "click and swish" unreliable on my PC. Maybe it is the way I am swishing!

Feature Request: Anyway to add a keyboard shortcut or similar?

It can be quirky, just make sure the mouse pointer stays within that area throughout the swipe and release. That being said, I will look into a better way and at least add scroll wheel support.

Those of you frustrated by the swipe method for browsing characters can rejoice! The "swipe panel" has been replaced with more traditional left/right arrows in the same location, which will appear as an overlay when moving the mouse over the respective half of the Kinship name area.

In addition to that, navigation can also be performed using the mouse wheel. Scrolling down will navigate to the next character and scrolling up will navigate to the previous one.

Adobe AIR Error

Quote:
This application requires a version of Adobe AIR which cannot be found. Please download the latest version of the runtime from http://www.adobe.com/go/getair , or contact the application author for an updated version.
I receive the error when I attempt to run the lcj.air package.

Installed Adobe AIR version: 2.7.0.19530

Any ideas?

The quickest and easiest possible solution would be to uninstall it via Programs & Features (or Add or Remove Programs) in your control panel, and then reinstall it.

If you should have any problems with doing this, or it doesn't fix the issue, please let me know - as there's a few additional possibilities.

I received the exact same error when attempting to uninstall it via the Control Panel, as well as when using the uninstaller tool built into CCleaner. If that wasn't enough I've been getting explorer crashes since I installed it. I may have to contact Adobe and see what they have to say... At this point I don't think this is an add-on issue. Maybe someone else can test the Adobe Air download and see what they end up with.

Before replying I uninstalled the latest version of the app, updated to the latest version, reinstalled lcj and everything went fine. My guess is somehow the installation got corrupted in some way.

From my own searches on the matter, I can suggest to other possibilities of at least uninstalling it, regardless of whether you want to bother with reinstalling it or not.

With both of these methods, you should have admin privelages, including running things as administrator if you have UAC turned on and are using Vista or Windows 7. If you're using xp, then just having an admin account is enough.

The first is simply running the installer (AdobeAIRInstaller.exe) via the command line, with the "-uninstall" flag, so that the line looks like:

Code:
AdobeAIRInstaller.exe -uninstall
If you're not comfortable with using the command line, just move the installer to your C:\ drive, open up the command window, and type the following first, followed by hitting Enter:

Code:
cd/
then the prompt should appear as:

Code:
c:\>
and then run the uninstaller as shown at the top.

If that doesn't work, then things get a bit more complicated - as it involves manually uninstalling AIR

To save some room in this post, you can find some pretty good instructions for handling this, as well as a couple of other things that could cause this problem, here. Although the article specifically mentions AIR 1.5 and Win 7 beta, the steps listed are still valid - however, to make things easier on you - I will make a few additions/corrections.
  • Ignore the small section starting with "If you are not able to install AIR applications from web," - that's a separate issue, and really has nothing to do with the main one.
  • When it comes to the part on the Shared Object Cache, the path as it is displayed is a bit confusing. It should read something along the lines of:

    C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects

where user name is your Windows account name. That part was missing.
  • If you are using Windows Xp, that path would be as follows:

    C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects
  • In either case, delete everything in that folder.
  • The windows installer clean-up utility mentioned in that post can be found here.

This tool will, for all intents and purposes, finish up the manual uninstall of Adobe AIR by removing its install configuration from Windows - in laymans terms, it will remove it from your installed programs list.

In good conscience I have to give a little back story to this tool. This was originally created by Microsoft in order to solve some Microsoft Office install issues (this is why when you install it, you'll see a "Office Update" banner) - however, using this tool for its intended purpose occasionally broke things. For that reason Microsoft stopped supporting/hosting the tool. As you can guess though, it's usefulness is not limited to Microsoft Office - as it works for any installed application - and quite well for smallish applications that don't have a bunch of other applications/services that depend on it. Anyway, that's why the link I gave you is to Softpedia, rather than Microsoft. Here's a link to the KB regarding the tool
  • Finally, feel free to ignore that last bit about (re)installing Adobe Media Player - I can't think of any reason why that would improve anything, and I can't justify supporting the installation of additional cr*p just to make something else work. I mean, if you happen to use it - then by all means, but otherwise just try installing AIR again with the installer you've already downloaded. That is, of course, unless you're fed up with AIR all together by now - which I certainly wouldn't blame you for

Whatever you decide - I hope you fix the problem, whether it be from what I've posted, what Adobe tells you, or some other way.

Command completely dropped the ball, but I was able to get an error log on the uninstall:

Quote:
[2011-07-18:08:55:18] Runtime Installer begin with version 2.7.0.19530 on Windows XP x86
[2011-07-18:08:55:18] Commandline is: -uninstall
[2011-07-18:08:55:18] No installed runtime detected
[2011-07-18:08:55:18] Starting runtime uninstall. Uninstalling runtime version
[2011-07-18:08:55:18] Exiting due to error: [ErrorEvent type="error" bubbles=false cancelable=false eventPhase=2 text="Unhandled exception TypeError: Error #1009" errorID=1009]
[2011-07-18:08:55:18] Runtime Installer end with exit code 7
At the moment I'm backing up data, checking on Windows updates, and attempting the different routes of uninstalling that you mentioned. I haven't bothered to contact Adobe yet -- I want to see how far I can get on the issue before I have to deal with tech support.

Typically -- I avoid Adobe all together. In my experiences over the years, Adobe software has typically been resource hogs and didn't run as well as some of its competitors. When it comes to flash however... unfortunately Adobe is it these days. I'll suck it up for this add-on and get this all figured out ( I may have to bug you some more depending on where I end up at. ). I'll reinstall with a new download and see what happens... If nothing else, these posts may help someone else if they run into the same issue.

[Update: July 19, 2011]

I attempted to install the Adobe AIR via safe-mode, as admin and as admin user -- both failed. After several manual uninstalls, reinstalls, a phone call to Adobe, and general frustration I'm going to take this as an opprotunity to switch to Linux full time. Once I get LOTRO going there, I'll attempt the add-on and Adobe AIR for Linux and see if it works for me. Adobe is discontinuing Adobe AIR for Linux after the current version -- will that be an issue with this add-on in the future?

In regards to Adobe Tech Support, if you need assistance don't bother. You can shell out $30.00 for the tech call, but I was informed that they're not trained to handle Adobe AIR issues. Then there's that whole thing about paying for support on a free product that doesn't work you from the start... Which is another issue entirely.

the only thing which could be better is the long time you need to load the app - Lotro-Herald for iOS is ab bit faster...

I hope you understood what I want to say with my bad english

Since this is a desktop widget, and more likely just to stay running (and updating), that the smooth and instant display of characters by pre-loading all the images and data, was worth the extra load time.

With a mobile app on the other hand, a load on demand system - where data/images are loaded as they are needed makes a bit more sense. The trade-off of course, is image "pop-in" (as they are loaded) and loading spinners as you access different characters or tooltips.

That being said, I can look into my options for caching the data after it's loaded the first time, so subsequent loads will be faster - but how feasible that is, depends on what's at my disposal with AIR.

Yeah, I was kinda afraid that their support would be less than helpful :/

As far as the difference between future versions of AIR, and the last supported version for Linux - I don't foresee that being an issue with this gadget. From the first version on, I've compiled it for Adobe AIR 2 (as opposed to even AIR 2.5) - and I can't think of any reason why I would need to change that target. The code for the app itself is 99% Flash - with the only AIR centric features being the display settings and the database for storing user settings. So I doubt any future changes to AIR will affect this.

To tell you the truth, I'm a bit frustrated myself with AIR and its numerous issues. The main reason I went with it was due to its cross-platform nature, and the fact that its developed by a known company. The latter I felt was important in order to even expect someone to download a 3rd party app. Right now I'm kinda stuck with it; but in the future, I may look into adapting LCJ to Mac OS X's desktop widget format, which I believe can be handled on Windows/Linux via the Kludget Engine.

Again, sorry for all the problems - I hope your experience on Linux is a vast improvement

Eh, the problems I think all come back to AIR and there was no way you could have foreseen the issues. It happens. As far as Linux goes I'm still getting Wine set up and all that I need in that department. Adobe AIR for Linux might be a no-go. I went to the site for the Linux package and I got a notification on install that it was a " bad package " so I stopped there for now... at least I think so.

If you port it using the Kludget Engine and get it working for Linux -- That'd be pretty awesome. I don't think I'm the only one that would use the Linux version, but who knows.
