Possibly Related Symptom

First off, thanks for making a GREAT plugin! Hopefully you'll be able to fix the problem soon.

On that note, this might be another clue to the source of the problem (or possibly a separate, unrelated red herring). My wife began playing LOTRO about 6 weeks ago, so I installed on her PC the same plugins that I have on mine, including AltInventory. We found that frequently (perhaps 80% of the time) when our characters would trade with each other, if I gave her anything as part of the trade, her client would crash when we completed the trade. (After she would log back in, she would find that the trade had gone through successfully.)

Oddly enough, she could trade items to me without my client crashing. It was was only when I gave anything to her that her client would crash.

After we disabled AltInventory following the release of Rohan, we found that her client would no longer crash during trades.

I'm not sure why her client would crash while mine would not. However, one significant difference is that her PC is a brand new Alienware gaming rig, so it runs significantly faster than my 3-year-old PC. If timing is involved, that might explain that.

Anyway, I hope this helps. It might be a completely separate bug, but hopefully it's a clue as to the source of the problem.

Good luck, and thanks again for the great plugin!

Could you POSSIBLY add the ability to get the control-left click wardrobe preview responses, and other tooltip information for items NOT currently held by our character? The information that'd we'd see if we viewed the item with compendium would be sufficent.

Trying to clean up my cosmetics collection, and while this is a great tool for items with the same name, it'd be nice to quickly compare appearances to a list of stuff I already have.

Unfortunately no. To generate tooltips and/or examination tags requires an Item ID which is not currently programatically accessible via Lua. The only way to have Item IDs is to carry the entire database of items which would take many months of work to get anything close to accurate, would drastically increase the plugin size and would be a nightmare to maintain. Not only would this require far more work than it is worth, it would innevitably become inaccurate and the increased memory footprint would significantly increase the number of client crashes due to Turbine's memory leaks. While it would be nice to have, it will have to wait until Turbine exposes Item IDs via the ItemInfo object.

Crash problems and report

Hi

I used this awesome plugin for 3 days. At day 2 I'v got some client crashes and after some tries I discovered it happen when I load Alt Inventory plugin. Generally each time I try to relog on another char, client crashes, also when press Unload All into system plugin manager. It does not happen when the plugin was not loaded.

Is there any way I can check some log and send more accurate information as a bug report?
I haven't expected any crashes since I start playing RoR without this plugin.

Thanks for the response! Hoping that turbine fixes the crash bugs or gives us a new functional implementation LUA for 8.1 . Trying to function without it as I alt around to find materials and other things that I've stored is really reminding me just how much I've loved this plugin!

To those experiencing crashes with the new RoR client:

This is sort of the "perfect storm" of bugs. First, the actual bug exists in the client/Lua implementation, not in the plugin. Second, any work-around requires first identifying what is actually crashing the client and since Alt Inventory is such a complex plugin and accesses so many parts of the Lua implementation that this will probably take several weeks. Third, my game machine is still not functioning properly so debugging is taking even longer than it should (client restarts are anywhere from five to ten minutes ). Fourth, mother nature has decided to put her two cents in - my home is in one of the areas of New England currently enjoying massive power outages following hurricane Sandy (100% outage in my town with no estimates on recovery time).

So, while I understand that some of you miss the convenience of viewing your off line alt info, my best advice is to temporarilly disable AltInventory until such time as either Turbine fixes the underlying bug or until I am able to track down whichever functionality is causing the crash and publish an interim version (without any new features) that can disable the problematic functionality. It is highly unlikely that either solution (Turbine's or mine) will be available for several weeks, probably well over a month.

While there aren't any other plugins offering the full scope of AltInventory's features (and if they did they would likely be crashing as well), there are a number of plugins that provide portions of the functionality.

Almost certainly a memory leak. I have a lot of RAM and a large swap space, and only see a crash when I am logging out, even if I have been online for hours.

Incidentally, one of my main uses for altinventory is to record notes. What special I need, for example, for ingredients. What type of tools I am using so my metalsmith knows if they need upgrading. I also keep a long detailed list of what deeds I am supposed to be working on, in level and regional order.

The auto-update on crafting tier is extremely useful, thanks. Helps remind me who needs to work on prospecting or forestry when I have hides or ore.

Most people are reporting a crash only when logging out a character (or entering Session Play which effectively is a log out). This would actually indicate that there is a problem with the client attempting to access memory which is no longer allocated to the process rather than just a memory leak (although it doesn't mean that the source of the two effects aren't related). At this point I'm not able to rule out anything and won't be able to until I can get a chance to run a number of test cases and try to isolate the underlying bug.

I thought I would be clever by only loading altinventory when I needed it but just trying to unload it caused the client to crash.

/plugins load altinventory
/plugins unload altinventory

Crash on log out

I can also confirm that Alt Inventory locks up my client when I try to log out a character who has it loaded.

To help in your bug-finding, then this (client crash) happens to me when I log off a character, but also happens if I unload the plugin with /plugins unload.

I hope you'll be able to find a work-around, since it's hard to live without this plugin after having gotten used to it

In 'wallet'

You seem to have a limit on the characters for the item field

'Western Heroes' Steel Leg-' ->'Western Heroes' Steel Leg-Guards Medallions'
'Western Heroes' Steel '->'Western Heroes' Steel Helmet Medallions'
'Western Heroes' Steel '-'>'Western Heroes' Steel Breastplate Medallions'

Ver 2.11b

I believe I have found and fixed the last of the client crash issues. I have been able to reliably load/unload, load/logout, load/enter session play, etc. multiple times without any further client crashes. If anyone continues to have an issue with client crashes in ver 2.11b, please let me know.

This version does NOT include any of the new functionality. Tracking down and fixing this crash has been the focus of my AltInventory development time since RoR launched so all new features had to be rolled back and put on hold until this bug was squashed. I do not at this time have an expected release date for ver 2.12 (to be honest, I'm going cross-eyed from staring at code and I really want to enjoy RoR for a bit before diving back in)

I'd like to thank everyone that provided info/feedback on the unload client crashes.

EDIT: If anyone downloaded 2.11b before I was able to catch the autoload bug (an endless loop of errors on autoload) and reupload it, I appologize but you will have to redownload ver 2.11b (I think I fixed it before anyone downloaded, but...)

Oh yeah, there is one related itsy bitsy change, AltInventory no longer supports session characters (they never had much other than stats anyway).

Re: Ver 2.11b

I'm still getting crashes on logout. Haven't had time to test extensively, but I think it's on characters who use the Notes feature of Alt Inventory. Thus far, the characters who don't have any notes saved have not crashed on logout since your latest update.
