Version crashes

I just downloaded your app for the firs time and it wont run at all for me. Crashes immediately on startup. zip is labeled as 3.0 and the executable date is 5/5/07. Is there a newer or older version i can try? It does this for me on Vista x64, and two different Win XP 32bit installs on different machines.

lil' help! I really want to try this out as it looks like the first great tool for the mod community!

I have been working on an issue with wheatgerm in regards to DirectX not initializing properly. I am not an expert programmer, so have patience, I am trying to figure it out. There is an older version, the link for 2.2 is listed in the Archive section for download. You can try that if you like.

A couple of things to note:
1. Make sure your .Net files are all up to date
2. Do not run the program when another DirectX program is running. My program does not play nice with other programs.

Also, send me a PM with any error messages that the program may produce, it could help solve the problem. Thanks.

Skin Viewer 3.1 and Fenir Wood 1.4 by AncientWolf

Does the Skin Viewer work with the Fenir Wood Skins?

I've only installed one skin, the Fenir Wood (none of the others are in the ...\ui\skins directory).

I get the following error after I do the file -> open -> browse to the Fenir Wood skin directory and then open the SkinDefinition.xml file that is there:

"Could not load Image: C:\Documents and Settings\....\ui\skins\Fenir Wood\basepanel_topleft.tga" click on OK for that error and I get a second error:

"Could not load Image: C:\Documents and Settings\....\ui\skins\Fenir Wood\basepanel_topright.tga" click on OK for that error and the Skin Viewer crashes, offering me Debug and Send Error Report.

Is this something I'm doing/not doing, or is it something else?

Thanks!

There appears to be something strange about some of the tga files with this skin. I don't know what, but it is causing my program some real pain. If I go through the process of opening the files in Photoshop, then saving them again, they start to work for me. I have not done all the images, but have started with the ones that popped up in the messages, and now I get different ones.

Perhaps someone who understands TGA files can PM me with info about why these ones don't want to work for me.

Edit: the part of the program that loads the images is in try-catch block for exception handling, but these images seem to cause even my exception handling to throw an exception.

Edit #2: Found out that the images in question are RLE compressed, which my program cannot handle. I am attempting to create a new process to load the RLE images.

Its my superduper copy protection!

No, seriously, I couldnt tell you why; All of my images are not made from scratch though- most are from older skins (other authors) that had been redone by me.

(Redone as in just used the placeholder, NOT the artwork!)

ie; Fenir Wood Compact used Kaylan's Compact- To insure I had all graphics
the folder was renamed and I went down the list in photoshop image by image
replacing them with mine.

AncientWolf:

Turns out the tga files are compressed, which my program cannot handle. For now, until I can learn to read the compress files, they will not be loaded.

AstroCat:

Its on my todo list.

Love it!

Man this program has been a real joy to use! Im still new and learning the skins art, but this has been one program thats made things alot easier for me.

What would make this a all in one prgram for me is if it provided a export placeholders for all the UI in a psd format so i can take the guess work out of sizing and such, maybe even come with a editable xml file for finished products.

Thats a big order to fill but imagine your name across the net for the "Super Duper All In One MMO UI Skinning Machine by D.H1cks!!!". Yeah, now that would rock! lol.

Big thanks again DH for the hard work you put in on such a awesome product!

I'm getting an error with the latest version that's saying (in sequential errors):
"Could not read XML data", then
"Object reference not set to an instance of an object", then
"Could not initialize the program. Exitting now.".

Any idea what might be causing this?

Edit: Looking back, all the versions since 3.0 are giving this error. I hadn't updated it since your 2nd release previously.

This means that the program cannot find the default XML file for some reason, or the file has been corrupted. Make sure there is a SkinDefinition.xml file in the same directory as the program.

Lightbulb Skin Viewer Update

I would like to give an update on the progress of the skin viewer.

The main reason I used DirectX in the program, was it had a simple method for loading .tga files. However, I found that it does not seem to handle compressed files properly. Not only does it fail to load the image correctly, it fails to even read the file properties correctly.

So, I am working on my own method of reading in the .tga files(which is more or less working). Since I won't need to use the DirectX function for reading the files anymore, I am going to remove DirectX from my program. This is a major overhaul of the program, but I am hoping that by doing so I also make the program run better for some of the users having issues.

This overhaul will take quite some time to complete, so there will not be any updates to the program for a while.

thanks for the work

I appreciate all the work you are putting into this. I'm sure I'm not the only one that wishes RLE TGA's would just go away. With video cards having 500+ megs of RAM on them now, texture compression just seems to be more trouble than it's worth for all but the most extreme cases.
