The number is generated by the plugin currently. In the icon there will always be one of the following: "R", "1", "2", "3", "4", "5", "6", "7", "8", "9", "9+".
When the icon is showing, and a reminder expires, the "R" changes to a number, indicating the number of expired reminders. If it's more than 9, it just says "9+".
When the number incremented, it "shimmers" until the mouse arrives.
If you don't like the built-in font (Trajan Pro Bold), the text could be replaced with .tga images.
Please also make a "highlighted" version of the icon for display when the mouse is present.
